Thanks to Susan, a seasoned aquarunner and our latest contributor, we've started expanding our country genre section. JogTunes presents BikeToTheBeat.com and welcomes aquarunners

We just launched the beta version of BikeToTheBeat.com. Here's what Dr. Bob, our founder, has to say about our new site:

"Like running to the beat of my songs, I found that pedaling to the beat is also fun and motivating. I'm a big jazz fan so I started with some jazz tunes and then decided to use our entire signed artist, running music database as a resource for biking songs.

"I'm totally aware of the risk of wearing a headset and playing music while riding a bike in heavy traffic and even on country roads. That's why the new site addresses stationary cycling, kinetic training, and biking on rollers.

"The prepared playlists that we posted and will add in the future are sequenced for warm-up, full speed, and cool-down segments. The difference between the playlists for running and biking is the BPM range that are used for warming up and cooling down. I'm encouraging the playing of songs in the 90 to 100 BPM range to start and end the workout. This forces cyclists to set the gears (or resistance) higher and encourages more muscle toning. I expect visitors to the site will make there own varied playlists depending on their workout preferences. The possibilities are obviously limitless.

"Spinners will be looking for songs in with tempos equal to 180 to 200 pedal strokes (90 to 100 revolutions) per minute (equal to 180-200 BPMs). We have some songs on the site in the 180 to 190 range and will be adding up to 210 in the future."

We also would like to welcome aquarunners to jogtunes.com. We understand that they enjoy songs in the upper range of BPMs as well. So the addition of tunes in the 190-200 BPM range will address their needs as well.

New Running Music by Nirvana, Hedda Layne, Eminem, ZZ Top and More

Members of the Nike Forum thread called "What is your favorite POWER song?" consistently post great power songs. For runners who enjoy running to the exact tempos of their music we posted 2 runnable tunes from this thread that fit the running range of 140 to 190 BPM. Thanks, bribel, for Nirvana's Breed. It runs at 162 BPM. Thanks also to ready to rock for We're Not Gonna To Take It by Twisted Sister. It runs at 150. Our opinion is power-type songs don't have to be fast, just motivating. Apparently, these thread members agree.

Runner's World Discussion members also continue to post their favorite running songs and playlists. Here's the link for the latest entries. We posted 3 tunes that are in the BPM range for great running. One member, slammin, suggested the Nevermind album by Nirvana as a great source of running music. In addition to Breed (see above) we posted Stay Away from the same album. The BPM is 167. Member jwwade likes Lose Yourself from Eminem's 8 Mile soundtrack. It runs at an ideal 171. For flat out running at 182 BPM, run1119 offered Tusk by Fleetwood Mac. You've got to check that one out. A big thanks to the Runner's World members for their suggestions.

For fast walkers and runners who like warm-ups we added more tunes in the 120s BPM range. Hedda Layne and Troy Lee Warden are a husband and wife duo and label artists now living in Dallas. We present two of their latest, very impressive works that both walk at a vigorous 128 steps-per-minute.

Peter's Picks for this week are classics. How could you not enjoy running at 151 to Soul Doctor by Foreigner and at 158 to ZZ Top's Got Me Under Pressure. Please go to Peter's great website for more great BPM (and steps-per-minute) ratings and reviews of runnable tunes. Our thanks again go to Peter for his invaluable contributions.

We found a great running music list posted by Lisa of Toronto at runningmania.com. We posted a total of 5 songs by one legend and 2 more recently formed great bands on her list:

* Mötley Crüe
* Sum 41
* Billy Talent

We wish to sincerely thank Peter and the two Lisas for their playlists.

Dr. Bob is finishing up the 4th JogTunesIndie Podcast episode. It's got some great songs. So if you want to match your running pace for 30 minutes to fine indie music, come on over to JogTunesIndie.com. Got iTunes? You'll find the podcast here.

New Running Music on JogTunes.com by +44, Edguy, Scissor Sisters, Nickelback, Snow Patrol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Akon and Jay-Z.

Please check out the new tunes we've added to JogTunes.com. The artists are +44, Edguy, Scissor Sisters, Nickelback, Snow Patrol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and some hip-hop/rap from Akon and Jay-Z.

We also added a new 30-minute music-paced running playlist called
Scissor Sisters Plus - A Pop/Rock BPM-Labeled iMix. This link takes you to the playlist page at JogTunes.com where there's a link to the iMix in the iTunes Music Store in the US. The "Sisters" are accompanied by Sheryl Crow and The Donnas. It's a great run!

We also added new functionality to our website. After searching for a BPM range or a genre, the resulting songs are listed in BPM order, from slower to faster. The new function allows you to reverse the order so you can move easily to the faster songs. We hope this will be helpful in finding tunes for your playlists.
Meanwhile, happy running and enjoy the music.

JogTunes.com publishes The JogTunesIndie Podcast, an Independent Music-Paced Running Podcast

We're happy to announce that we have published The JogTunesIndie Podcast.

Dr. Bob, the founder of jogTunes.com, is the host of the show. It's a 30 minute "run to" format with independent music separated by brief discussions about the artists and the beats-per-minute. The sequence of tunes involves a warm-up, easy run, peak run, easy run, cool-down pattern. There may be more than one song in each section. The source of the music is The Podsafe Music Network. The companion website, jogtunesindie.com, provides the podcast's play and subscription links , playlist, and links to the tunes on the iTunes Music Stores (US, UK, Ireland, and Japan).

We must admit, it was really fun to run to the podcast. The songs are great, motivating, and paced just right.

We look forward to comments about our podcast. Just email them to comments@jogtunes.com.

And stay tuned for more BPM-labeled music at jogTunes.com, coming soon.

JogTunes.com presents more music to run to with a twist of metal

Again we consulted Peter Andersson's voluminous list of great running music and came up with more additions to JogTunes.com's Tunes List. These artists have been around awhile and some are still out there. They include The Donnas, Depeche Mode, Black Sabbath, the Ramones, Sisters of Mercy, Savage Garden, and Weezer. We hope you enjoy a little bit of memory lane.

Please also check out Peter's site for his top 50 running music picks. It's mostly in Swedish but the titles are in English. He rates the songs for music-paced running using the phrase "steps-per-minute" to indicate the actual running pace that best fits the song.

Thanks, again, Peter, for your great contribution to music-paced running.

We wish to thank Peter for the great playlist he submitted on our Forum. We have posted just a few of the wonderful music-paced running (MPR) tunes he listed. It helps pay the bills.

Meanwhile, happy running and enjoy the music.

Thanks Geek News Central for Kind Words About JogTunes

We want to thank Todd Cochrane of Geek News Central and the GNC Podcast for his kind words and prescient promotion of The JogTunes Podcast. Due to overwhelming fatigue, Todd stated, in his Oct 3, 2006 episode, that jogTunes is a podcast rather than a website. He kindly mentioned our appearance in the LinkShare ad in Revenue Magazine (see our last blog), and guessed my age based on my photo in the ad. Thankfully he guessed around 50. The truth, I'm now willing to admit, is that I'm 63.

The other truth is that, unbeknownst to Todd, I had already recorded a promo for the new JogTunes Podcast. I know I need to improve the sound quality and maybe pep things up a little...but it's a start.

Since the JTCP (JogTunes Podcast) will provide running music by independent artists, the resource for the tunes will be the Podsafe Music Network. I'll try to pick songs that are sold on iTunes as the PMN is not yet selling songs as of this blog date. The website will be called JogTunesIndie.com.

Here's the promo. Please be patient while I prepare the first podcast. I'll keep you posted.

We're working on expanding the website so come back soon to see what's happening.

New Running Music, Jogging Music and jogTunes News

Hi music-paced running fans.

We just added more songs at jogTunes.com. Come see tunes from Wolfmother, AFI, Birdman & Lil Wayne, BHI, KRAB & Lil Jon, and Neil Young. The tempos are in the range of 152 to 172 BPM, even the hip-hop/rap. (Just a reminder: about half of the hip-hop/rap on jogTunes.com is in the 80-100 range. You can double-time the 80-90 BPM tunes and run them at 160 to 180 BPM. It's really fun. Or you can just walk to them to warm up or cool down.)

Also, we put an entry in Wikipedia for "Running Music." You're invited to contribute. Check it out at Running Music Wiki.

Happy running and enjoy the music.

Running Music, Sport Music, Nikeplus, and JogTunes

iTunes just posted a new catagory inside the Music Store: Nike Sport Music. There you'll find compilations and iMixes intended primarily for running. They boast that the music is "made to move you." In their promo, Paula Radcliffe even alludes to the concept of music-paced running. But, rarely is there a song in their collection that matches the pace of a runner. Only jogTunes.com provides a specially selected listing of songs whose tempos fall within the range of a runner's cadence. We're guessing that some runners may like the Nikeplus shoes and the Sport Music playlists. We know they'll love running to jogTunes.

Also, please check out the website, jogTunes.com. It's got some additions including tunes by Sublime, The Fixx, Moby, and the Beastie Boys. Just start scrolling down on the first page or find the songs by using the artist selection field. Like Nike/iTunes we have playlists. But, better yet, you can make your own lists that match your running time and artist preferences.

Enjoy the run. Enjoy the music.

iTunes, NikePlus, and jogTunes

Well, music-paced running fans, we got a little help from Nike and iTunes. You probably have heard that the two companies have partnered to make Nike+iPod, a high tech tracker of running experience using a sensor in the shoes and an iPod. In additon, Apple is apparently applying for a patent for a system that uses the running data to set the tempo of your tunes on the iPod. Intriguing.

But don't you think it would be more fun to have the system pick a jogTune that matches your pace? The iPod could be programmed to say something like, "You're running at 160 beats-per-minute. Here's a song to match." Or, " Would you like to push it and go to 180 BPM? Press the select button and you'll be listening to XYZ's tune, Run Fun, at 180 BPM." Now how do I get Apple to hear me.

Also, please check out the website, jogTunes.com. It's got some additions including a list of all of the artists with links to their tunes.

jogTunes chosen by LinkShare for Their "My Story" Campaign

Great news! LinkShare, the prominent and pioneering pay-for-performance affiliate marketing company, has chosen us as a participant in their promotion campaign. So, we're going to New York City, courtesy of LinkShare, to do a photo shoot, meet with their PR people and attend the LinkShare Symposium. Mark, from LinkShare, told us that they really like our concept. JogTunes will be featured in an ad in Revenue Magazine. This will be a great opportunity to promote music-paced running and jogTunes and to help LinkShare with their campaign. Should also be great fun.

The website jogtunes.com is being modified to be more functional for newcomers and return visitors. The changes will be up and running tomorrow. We'll also be adding affiliate links to running merchandise companies.

We welcome your feedback here or on our forum.

Catch the new songs and the PMN is coming!

JogTunes has added more great running titles to jogtunes.com. Here's a list of the artists:

T.A.T.U.
Steps
The Killers
Faithless
The Zutons

My sincere thanks goes to Joe, my UK consultant, for turnng me on to the Zutons' songs and other great artists who have produced runnable tunes. As a teenager, he helps me focus on what's big in his world, especially in the UK.

I'm looking forward to the implementation of the Podcast Music Network's affiliates program. I'll be one of the first to join and will then begin posting independent runnable songs that can be purchased on the PMN. What's great about the PMN resource? The artists get a greater piece of the action and podcasters can embed these podsafe (non-RIAA) songs in their podcasts for the enjoyment of listeners who run. I'll keep you posted.

Happy music-paced running!

Jogtunes gets an award

We've been featured on Call For Help by Amber McCarthur, Robin Good's New Media Pick of the Week, and as the Featured Affiliate on the iTunes page of Linkshare's website.

But our most recent recognition is an award by the Linkshare Club as this week's Best Creative website! Scroll down on the Linkshare Club page to see the details.

What is Linkshare? They run what they claim is the largest pay for performance affiliate marketing network on the Internet. Clicks on links on jogTunes.com that result in sales are paid to jogTunes through Linkshare.

Hopefully, this is just the beginning of the popularization of music-paced running and our music service.

More Tunes for Music-Paced Running

Here's a list of the artists whose "runnable" songs I just posted on jogtunes.com.

- Beck
- A Perfect Circle
- System of a Down
- Audioslave

I admit that I select most songs solely by listening to the 30 second clips in iTunes and counting the BPM with Blacktree's iTunes-BPM Inspector. Since I don't listen to the entire song, I can miss changes in tempos and other characteristics of the song that might affect the running pace. I apologize for this but hope that the user understands that it would be prohibitive to purchase all of the songs just in order to look for unusual characteristics. I encourage users to contact me about any songs that they find are inappropriately listed as "runnable" tunes on jogTunes.com.

I also wish to acknowledge the numerous joggers and runners who have shared their running playlists with the public. They have been most helpful to me. I hope they will understand that I only chose truly music-paced running songs recorded by their favorite artists. Many songs are enjoyed by runners even though the songs' tempos don't truly match their running pace. While that's all well and good, jogTunes is promoting only running-paced songs to foster the acceptance and enjoyment of music-paced running.

Happy running and enjoy the music!

Bob

Expanded our name

I thought I'd add "music-paced running" to the blog title to expand the blog concept and promote the phrase I coined. More and more people are admitting that music-paced running (MPR) is fun, motivating, and invigorating. And music preferences abound -- from rock to jazz (my favorite) to alternative to happy hardcore.

If you haven't heard of happy hardcore, check out this article for a simple explanation. Then Google away! I have yet to post HH to jogtunes.com but I will. Most of the songs are highly "runnable."

Meanwhile, I just posted 4 Beck songs to jogTunes.

I've received a number of lists of favorite artists from runners and will continue to look for the runnables (jogtunes) among their songs in iTunes. Please keep those lists coming. You can post them in the jogTunes forum or email them to me.

Happy MPR!

More jogtunes for music-paced running

I coined the phrase, "music-paced running", to describe the unique activity that is gaining in popularity. There's no question that running to the tempo of good music can get you motivated and can add to the fun of exercising. It's not for everyone and many runners will find that they prefer music-paced running on occasion but not every time they run. Whatever you prefer, the tunes are available at jogTunes.com.

I just added songs from Coldplay and Something Corporate. Please find them using the artist search at the jogtunes.com site and tell me what you think about them as jogtunes.

Casual running and jazz

Needless to say, the suggested 30-minute playlists at jogTunes.com are geared towards the casual runner who enjoys a half-hour jog several days a week. What better way is there to enhance the fun of a short run than by running to the beat of jazz? Music-based running (matching your pace to the tempo) is like dancing. It's fun, it keeps you going, and it invigorates.

Our latest playlist is the Basie/Ferguson jogSet. It builds to a BPM of 184 which is the tempo of Ferguson's Birdland. Watch your pulse monitor because this tune will push you.

Of course, the tune list in jogTunes.com provides many runnable songs that can be inserted into longer lists for the more serious runners or placed between several podcasts to make the mid-point of a run a little more fun. Or, just play a runnable song or two in the middle of a quiet run for variety and pacing.

And don't forget, we have links to the UK and Ireland iTunes Music Stores for many of our jogTunes.

Enjoy your next run!

The UK and Irish Connections

I'm starting to add links to the UK and Irish iTunes Music Stores in the jogTunes.com Tunes database. Users need to open their respective stores to facilitate access to the tunes. I hope people in the UK and Ireland will find this helpful and give me feedback on how it's working out.

jogTunes Tunes List Updated

Since my last post I've been adding more songs to the jogTunes Tunes List. It continues to amaze me how few songs actually have tempos in the runnable pace range. I've added tunes from the following artists:

Filter
Soungarden
Freq Nasty
The Crystal Method
Paul Oakenfeld
The Prodigy
C & C Music Factory (Listed as C+C Music Factory in jogTunes)
Meat Beat Manifesto
Electric Light Orchestra
Marc Anthony
Oscar D'Leon
Crowded House
Peter Gabriel
Ben Harper
Counting Crows
Pearl Jam
Switchfoot
Depeche Mode

A Trail Runner's Blog (see Links) is the number one source of visits to jogTunes. I'm grateful to Scott for the link.

I'm developing links to iTunesUK and other European iTunes Music Stores. It will take some time but it'll be fun...and maybe increase my earnings.

I welcome any suggestions and comments here or on the jogTunes Forum.

A New Playlist Featuring Bloc Party

jogTunes presents a new playlist (jogSet) called Bloc Party and More jogSet. We saved you the work of finding runnable songs in Bloc Party's recent album Silent Alarm and in an iTunes Live Session. Check it out here. The BPM ranges from 156 to 172. The iMix also includes runnables from Pearl Jam, NIN, The Chemical Brothers, and Ben Harper. The last song by Harper, Bring the Funk, should be walked in a cool-down mode at 100 BPM.

Rob Nelson of areyouageek (?) spoke highly of jogTunes on his 9/18 podcast. I'm grateful to him for helping to popularize music-paced running.

Finally a special thanks to Nathan Moore of phusebox and Scott Dunlap of A Trail Runner's Blog for their support of jogTunes.

The mornings are cool and crisp in Moab and there's a dusting of snow in the La Sal Mountains. It doesn't get any better for the morning workout.

jogTunes on the MacCast

The new and, I think, improved, jogTunes, was introduced to the podcasting world by Adam Christianson on his popular podcast, the MacCast. It was on his 9/13/05 show. And sure enough, the traffic to jogTunes increased exponentially. I'm grateful to Adam for his help

I've been thinking about the many ways users may find jogTunes helpful. They may place a "runnable" tune in the faster range (about 170 to 180 beats-per-minute) in the middle of their regular running playlist to ensure they're running at peak pace. Or they may switch to several runnable songs after listening to a podcast during warm-up. Others may create a full playlist of runnable songs or download one of the playlists on jogTunes.

I'm still waiting to find out how many other people will find it a whole lot of fun to run to the pace of music. I've written emails to several bloggers: A Trail Runner's Blog and A Runner's Blog, and will post to forums where there is interest in running to music.

Also, foreign versions of JogTunes may be helpful. Japan has just joined the iTunes community. Most of the European countries are already on line with iTunes. This may get interesting.

Happy running to the beat!

jogTunes Revamping

Over the past 2 months I've been working on a cleaner website with a mySQL/PHP database running in Apache on my PowerBook with Tiger now installed. It's been quite a trip. I vowed that I'd spend nothing on a database and application server and so far it's been on the cheap.

Well, we got noticed by another blogger, Thom, in the UK. Here's the post called BPM. I've entered a comment as well. Once I get the new version up and running, I'll start publicizing it via blogs. I understand that that's probably the best way to get noticed.

Running with my 2 dogs has improved. We took them to obedience training classes and now they understand the word "heel"...well, barely. The little Cairn Terrier is a bit feisty but then that's what the breed's all about.

So I understand that there's an mp3 player that you can use underwater! Some day jogTunes.com may include swimTunes for swimmers who do laps.

Gabi, my daughter, is now in India. Her blogs are wonderful and she even found the time to remind me to update this blog. Thanks, Gabi! You can catch her posts at Chartandwaters.
